Captain America sequel crushes at box office

Marvel can seem to do no wrong. Their most recent hit Captain American: The Winter Soldier opened in theaters April 4th and was another hit. The movie made $95,023,721 in its opening weekend and has grossed a total of $237,155,480 as of May 2nd.

Chris Evans, who played Captain America/Steve Rogers in both Captain America: The First Avenger and Marvel’s Avengers, stars alongside acting super stars Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlett Johansson who play their roles in Marvel’s Avengers as Nick Fury and Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow respectively. The trio is joined by new comers Robert Redford, who is fantastic in his role as Alexander Pierce, and Anthony Mackie who plays Sam Wilson/Falcon, Marvel’s newest superhero.

This is the third film in Marvel’s “Phase 2” following Ironman 3 and Thor: The Dark world. The storyline follows Steve Rogers two years after the events that took place in the Avengers movie. The Captain still struggles with adjusting himself to the modern world, with no apparent social life or girlfriend. Problems become much more complex when Nick Fury is assassinated by the mysterious Winter Soldier. Rogers then gets branded as a trader by SHIELD and sets out with Black Widow to stop the Winter Soldier and figure out what’s really going on with SHIELD.

The sequel is much more intense then the first film. It is the first time we see Captain America live up to his full potential of bad-a**ness. He was overshadowed by the other heroes in Marvel’s Avengers which was somewhat expected. When the other heroes include a giant green monster, a Nordic god, and a millionaire, robot suit wearing, playboy there’s not much a good moral, old fashion, super soldier can do.

It was good to see Marvel go a little more serious and dark in the sequel. It showed another side of the Captain and definitely was more enjoyable. Added with a new up and coming superhero in The Falcon it made for a truly enjoyable film. Marvel gave true fans a whole lot of answers about the previous Avengers movie and gave us a whole lot to get excited about for upcoming Marvel movies and Avengers: Age of Ultron set to hit the big screen in the summer of 2015.

Overall Captain America: The Winter Soldier was thrilling and had a good story line. It was well written as well as directed. It made the viewer extremely excited for the new Avengers movie, an art that Marvel has mastered. I highly recommend the movie to everyone, even if you don’t like super hero movies I think you would enjoy this movie. And at the very least you get to see Scarlet Johansson in her Black Widow costume; which is well worth the price of admission.
