The Giants take the Series again

Capping off an historical playoff run, the San Francisco Giants finished off the World Series with a sweep of the Detroit Tigers Sunday night in Detroit. Game four was one for the history books, ending in the tenth inning with a 4-3 win for the Giants. The last out came from the reigning AL Triple Crown champion Miguel Cabrera as he struck out looking. It was the first time a National League team had swept an American League team in the World Series since the 1990 Cincinnati Reds. This was also the first time a National League team has won the World Series twice in the last three years since the Big Red Machine in 1975 and 1976. This makes it even harder for our hometown Reds fans to take, because of how the Giants beat them this year in the playoffs. Many people say that it should be the Reds holding that trophy. They were winning their five game series with the Giants by two games before the Giants came storming back to take the next three games and the series. This is the second time the Giants have knocked off the Reds on their way to the World Series in the past three years. Not only did the Giants overcome a huge deficit in the series to the Reds but also in the next series with the Cardinals. In that series they were down three games to one, but ended up coming all the way back at home in game seven to take the series, sending them to the World Series. The Giants were considered to be a major underdog in this series due to a 4-0 sweep of the New York Yankees accomplished by the Tigers. Justin Verlander, the best pitcher in the Majors and the ace of the Tiger squad made it look very unlikely that the Giants could come out of the Series with the title. However, this didn’t stop them. They put up more runs against him than any other Tiger hurler. They scored eight in game one which ended up being more than the Tigers managed in the whole series. With unstoppable offense and fantastic defense, the Giants brought home the crown. The Giants were over looked all season and still were until the very end. It didn’t stop them, though, as they took the World Series by storm once again. Next year they will try to make it three in the past four years, and it’s very possible they will. This time, however, they won’t be over looked no matter what the odds are.
