Elder’s optional walk One of Elder high school’s mostfamous tradition is the Elder Walk. This is Elders’ 90 th anniversarythis year, and now they have added onto the Elder Walk. Elder highschool has added an optional service instead of the walk if students would liketo participate. I spoke with Mr. Auer about who was the one who came up withthe idea? He said “We have been talking about this for several years. Wethought since it is the 90 th year that it would be the perfecttime.” How did you get the places to allow the students to attend theirfacility for the morning? “We called several places that we had worked with inthe past, and that could handle the amount of students.” Was the outcome of thestudents that would like to attend the optional service work what youpredicted? “I thought it would be more than thirty-four, it isn’t disappointingbecause it just shows that the guys like to walk.” I alsospoke with Mr.Otten and asked what brought the idea of putting in the optionalservice into the walk? He replied with “Somethingspecial for our 90 th celebration for upperclassmen only. Elder is well known for our communityservice and the thought was that we could help others in a way that would bemore practical than walking—by doing. Limited only to upperclassmen because oftransportation challenges the underclassmen would experience.”
