As far as the music industry is concerned, 2016 was a phenomenal year with a multitude of breakout artists and record-breaking hits.  New projects by Kanye West, Snoop Dogg, and Kendrick Lamar proved that the older artists still have their talents. Still, 2016 ended up being a huge year for newer artists.

Sidney Selby III or “Desiigner,” as he calls himself, released his song “Panda” in 2015.  As I mentioned, in 2016 Kanye West dropped his most recent project “The Life of Pablo,” and sampled Panda on one of those tracks called “Father Stretch my Hands pt. 2”  This bred peak publicity for Desiigner and eventually landed him the top spot on the US Billboard Hot 100.

There lies my first problem.  I understand the attraction to the song, but to say that this is the best song our generation has to offer is embarrassing and simply false.  It does have a great beat thanks to his producer “Menace,” and it is appealing to listen to if you ignore the lyrics (or lack thereof).  There is no question that it is more of a party song than a song with lyrical essence and deeper meaning; regardless, it rubs me the wrong way that he is being lauded as a prodigy and rap legend on account of this mediocre song alone.

The song Panda begins and ends with Desiigner’s low and often times inarticulate voice chanting “Panda… panda… panda, panda, panda…”  In between that, he says “Panda” more than 40 times (yeah, I counted).  If you listened to the song, you wouldn’t be able to make any type of guess at what Desiigner is mumbling about.  To give you a hint, a few of his main talking points are: cars, guns, mixing drugs with his Fanta beverage, and the amount of “broads” that he has in Atlanta.

Add to his meaningless lyrics the senseless verbiage that comes out of his mouth as he tries to impersonate gun shots, and you have yourself a terrible song that millions of people love!  To be frank, it disgusts me, but this isn’t all.

After proving his “talent” with Panda, he was chosen to be a part of the 2016 XXL Freshman Class, a showcase for up and coming rappers.

When this was first released I watched and laughed as Desiigner made a fool out of himself, just as I expected.  Lil Dicky blows Desiigner out of the water and its not even close.  Anderson Paak’s music is much more slow tempo and relaxed than the other members of the Freshman Class, but even his freestyle is put together better than Desiigner’s, as he repeats the same hook about 27 times and does his gunshot ad-lib thing.  It is a laughable performance but Desiigner is visibly proud of himself and I’m pretty sure he thought he did a good job.  What a fool.

Aside from his music being an abomination, he is also simply the worst person ever.  A self-proclaimed drug addict who is unable to do anything besides rap about murdering dudes and his abuse of pain killers, marijuana, cough medicine and countless other drugs, he might be even worse when he’s not rapping.  When he opens his mouth, it isn’t words that come out, but instead nonsensical sound effects, and strange, spastic noises.  I can’t think of any other person who would ever act like that on a daily basis.  The man is an enigma and I really don’t like him.
