There is something “shady” going on
The music industry was playing hide and seek, and it finally found Marshall Mathers. Marshall Mathers, better known as Eminem, will be releasing a new album which he has been working on for the past six months.
Marshall Bruce Mathers III was born to make music. His life was a roller coaster ride which finally came to rest in the midst of a hip-hop legend, Andre Romelle Young (a.k.a. Dr. Dre). Mathers was signed by Young’s record label, and his first major album was The Slim Shady LP (1999). He later went on to create The Marshall Mathers LP (2000).
Ever since the release of The Slim Shady LP, Mathers has won numerous Grammy awards for rap/hip-hop. He is also considered one of the best-selling artists of all time.
His music is not known for censorship or conservativeness. He has created his music based on the life which he lived while in Detroit. Drugs, gang violence, and sex were all a part of the man who is often referred to as Slim Shady. His songs depict these three areas of his life in a graphic manner, and the albums which he has made are often tagged with “Parental Advisory: Explicit Content.”
Sophomore Connor Dermody does not think his mom would like to hear Eminem’s voice busting rhymes throughout her house. “My mom has heard his music, and she would prefer I not listen to it. I don’t think she would stop me from listening to it though,” said Dermody.
Another aspect of Eminem’s music is his family. After hearing a few of his songs, it is easy to realize that Marshall Mathers cares about his family. Many of his songs describe his daughters and how much he loves them. He also raps about how he is trying to provide a life for them which he never had.
Eminem played Jimmy “B-Rabbit” Smith in the movie 8 Mile (2002). This movie is based on Marshall Mathers’ progression from a Detroit thug to a dream chaser in search of a better life by rapping. The song “Lose Yourself” was part of the movie’s original soundtrack, and it is now one of Eminem’s greatest songs of all time.
In the latter part of the 2000’s, Mathers tackled the same topics in his music, especially in the album Recovery (2010). Instead of rapping about how his life was shaped by Detroit’s underworld, he rapped about his triumph from where he was earlier in his life.
The past few years have been lacking Eminem in the top charts, but now he is ready to take the Billboards back by storm with The Marshall Mathers LP 2, a sequel to his previous album. This album is filled with some of Eminem’s best music to date. There are songs which are reminiscent of his earlier days as a boy with a dream in Detroit, and there are also songs with some new tastes which he has never dabbled in.
Senior Kyle Koppenhoefer is a fan of Slim Shady. He said, “He is one of my favorite rappers, and I’m looking forward to his new album because he has not released new music in a while.”
The Marshall Mathers LP 2 is one of the most highly anticipated albums of 2013. There will be some rapid-fire rhyme spitting as well as new beats which put a different spin on his music. Rihanna will be adding to her prestigious music career by contributing to the song “The Monster.” This is Rihanna’s second time being affiliated with an Eminem album. Kendrick Lamar will also be featured in the new album. A few songs have already been released on iTunes, and they have had positive feedback from critics.
The real Slim Shady will be standing back up when The Marshall Mathers LP 2 is released on Tuesday November 5, 2013.
