Lion King provides opportunity to revisit classic story
Simba is the king.
Everybody knows that some of the best movies ever created are older (Godfather, Wizard of Oz, etc.). The problem with watching these movies is dealing with the poor quality and sound effects. I have become accustomed to the more modern animations and sound effects, so anything other than this drives me crazy. If not for these flaws, I would re-watch many of my childhood favorites. Now, this is a possibility with The Lion King.
The Lion King is one of my favorite childhood movies and is about the journey through much of Simba’s childhood and young adult life. It describes all of the ordeals and challenges he goes through during this time. Along the way, Simba develops a love for Nala, one of his childhood friends. In the end, Simba overcomes a tragedy in his life and defeats his wicked Uncle Scar in order to preserve his kingdom.
This installment was unusual because it was a remake of a classic children’s animated movie. The original The Lion King was made in 1994 and was a huge hit. The remake was shot entirely in VR (virtual reality) and looked very realistic.
More often than not, remakes tend to take their own approach to the movie and change up much of the plot. This movie is also unique because it followed almost the exact story line of the original.
The famous musicians Childish Gambino (Donald Glover) and Beyoncé star in this film as Simba and Nala. I was very surprised with their wonderful performances. I didn’t think two musicians could act just as well as they sing. They also had several songs they sang throughout the movie which was perfect for them.
Seth Rogen was Pumbaa and there was not a better role for him. His comedic relief was very important in this film. He played this character just how he should have been played. Another comedic relief came in the form of Billy Eichner who played Timon. He, too, portrayed Timon in line with the first Lion King.
The special effects in this film were amazing. Although it was an animated film, the effects made the objects look very realistic. The animals and the terrain around them were beautiful. It was unique to see such great quality on an animated film.
I highly recommend going to the theater to watch this movie. It is amazing to see the work that went into perfecting the plot and animations on a big screen. Even though you probably already know what is going to happen because it is a remake, I still suggest watching it. There is something amazing about being able to relive one of your childhood favorites with the addition of today’s digital realism.
