Fall Guys: Is it overhyped?
A review of Mediatonic’s new smash hit
Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout has been taking the world by storm. The fun new take on the battle royale genre has enthralled PS4 and PC gamers across the world. Since its release date of August 4, 2020, it has already claimed major accomplishments and praise from the players and critics. However, I decided to see if it really does live up to the hype.
Developed by Mediatonic, the game was first shown at E3 2019. To be honest, I did not have any high expectations for it. I thought, oh, another battle royale game, how original. But this game has no similarities to Fortnite, Warzone, and others. Fall Guys throws 60 players into a match and through different rounds of mini games eventually ends up with a winner. From experience, it is fairly difficult to win a game in these circumstances.
The mini games are decently fun. There are 24 of them, so they include a wide variety, limiting repetitiveness. I asked senior Gus Middendorf about his thoughts on the mini games. He said, “Well Mitch, I’d have to say Door Dash is my favorite, but they’re all entertaining and a good time.”
Along with these fun mini games, the character design makes it even more lighthearted. You play as a bean looking character that you can customize in many ways. It allows for something to strive for, such as getting a new skin.
The online multiplayer is the key to this game’s success. This allows for friends to share a laugh and even work together to get to the next stage; however, friendships can be lost because in the end, there is only one winner.
Technically, the game works well. Controls are easy to figure out and you really are not at a huge disadvantage if you are a new player. I picked the game up and made it far right away. That aspect of the game makes you want to keep going until you finally get the victory. It makes it feel attainable.
Verdict: Ten out of ten. Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout is a fun and perfectly made game. It is deserving of the hype, reimagining the popular battle royale genre and creating a unique, cute, and exciting experience everyone can enjoy.
