Residing on the edge of mainstream music
Indie folk has been around for quite a while now, but it is just now starting to get recognition for the various artists who are reaching the billboard 100.
If you want to get technical, then the genre has received acclaim in the past, such as Mumford and Sons when they first debuted The Cave five years ago. However, the genre as a whole is now receiving recognition rather than just Mumford and Sons, Bon Iver and Of Monsters and Men.
Many people have begun to listen to the genre because it covers a broad spectrum of sounds that contains at least one sound that will fit an individual’s niche.
As the title suggests, some of the songs sound like that of Indie rock, where others sound like the laid back guitar strumming of folk music. However, some of the songs are a perfect combination of the two where the upbeat voices meet the guitar strumming.
Many people have only heard of the big names like Mumford and Sons or Bon Iver, but if they would take the time to sit down and listen to the genre, they may realize that the two aren’t even the best.
Personally, I am a big fan of Beirut, their style is more upbeat, and some people wouldn’t classify them as Indie folk, but they are. That is one of the beauties of Indie folk; there is no set way it will sound, every single band has a unique sound and each band makes it work the way they need to.
Mrs. Brandel and Austin Porta are two other fans of Indie Folk, enjoying the sounds of Iron & Wine and Jose Gonzalez. Mrs. Brandel was first person to introduce me to Indie Folk, and I have fallen in love with the genre since.
I never even knew about the genre until it was recommended to me, and recommendations are the main source of the spread of music. So now I recommend you to give the music a try because it could be your new favorite genre, as it is for many others.
Indie folk has been taking rise for a few years now, but it really took off in 2013. Bands have won Grammys, millions of albums have been sold, and parties have been accentuated by the easy-going tones of Indie folk.
