The 2013 Grammy Awards show was truly a showcase of the great popular music that is out in America today. Unlike the MTV VMA’s where Nikki Minaj’s hairstyle was the focus of the night, the Grammy’s focused on recognizing artists who truly deserve it. Up and coming star Ed Sheeran opened the night of performances with his song “The A-Team” along with legend Elton John. The two actually made a great signing duo, with John playing piano and Sheeran playing guitar. The next performance was done by the band Fun, and this was probably the most moving of the whole show. They played their song “Carry on”, and got everyone in the crowd into it. To everyone’s surprise, real water symbolizing rain starting falling from the ceiling during the last chorus. Fun still “carried on” with their song, of course. Other acts of the night were good as well. Rhianna performed a very slow and emotional song which is very surprising considering her usual fancy dance numbers. Jack White also made an appearance, rocking the stage with a guitar solo. On another note, the show made a wonderful tribute to Bob Marley. Bruno Mars was singing his new single “Locked Out of Heaven” when suddenly; Sting came out and played bass for the song. This is not too surprising considering how much Mars’ new song sounds like a Police song. It has that reggae feel given to the world by Bob Marley himself. Rhianna also joined the stage to sing one of Marley’s songs as did Ziggy Marley. The night was a great improvement to the 2012 Grammy’s. Indie bands like Mumford and Sons and The Lumineers were getting noticed and overall, all performances were decently good. No performance stuck out like a sore thumb. It is good to see that popular music is getting better. Hello. My name is Nick Antone and I'm a writer for The Purple Quill, the online news site you are currently on. Every Sunday afternoon, I eat a toasty ham sandwich and ponder my life while blogging at Panera Bread; just kidding, I'm just trying to sound smart. Anyway, writing is a release for me. I find comfort in knowing that I can write whatever I want and have an opinion. Aside from writing, music is my favorite thing in the world. I play guitar, and I don't know what else I could do that would make me happier. Some of my favorite sports are hockey, disc golf, and ultimate frisbee. I hope to bring you lots of hard-hitting news that make you think.
