How I Met Your Dad was a failed pilot but fans hope that a new spinoff is on its way.

If you own a Netflix account, there is a very good chance that you have spent several hours watching the popular sitcom How I Met Your Mother.

In recent years, almost every Netflix subscriber has followed the story of how Ted Mosby (Josh Randor) ending up meeting his life as well as telling stories of all his old friends like Marshall Erickson (Jason Segel), Lily Aldrin (Alyson Hannigan), Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders), and Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris).

The series, which started running on CBS in 2005, lasted for nine season and aired nearly 208 episodes in total before the finale was aired on March 31, 2014.

With the nationwide popularity of How I Met Your Mother, CBS had decided to order a pilot for a spinoff for the popular series called How I Met Your Dad. However, due to disagreements between the network and the creators, the pilot was never shown of TV or released to the public and CBS ultimately passed on the pilot and series all together.

Nina Tassler, the CBS Entertainment President at the time, talked to reporters after the news was announced.

“To say we loved this show and we love these producers is an understatement. There were elements of the pilot that didn’t work out. We tried to reach out and engage them in terms of them redoing the pilot. That’s not happening right now.”

Now, nearly two and half years later, rumors have been swirling around the internet that attempts to air another spinoff to the original How I Met Your Mother story have begun again. Nellie Andreeva, a reporter for Deadline, was the first to mentioned the works of a new spinoff called How I Met Your Father.

Although the original How I Met Your Mother was written by co-producers Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, it has been said that This is Us co-executive producers Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, both who were involved in writing the failed pilot, have begun writing the new script but it has yet to be taken out of the studio.

The current President of CBS Entertainment, Glenn Geller, was recently asked about the potential of a spinoff to the original series.

“We haven’t seen anything, we haven’t been pitched anything. I’m excited to read it when it’s finished, and it could potentially be a project for us,” Geller told reporters.

Although most How I Met Your Mother fans are optimistic and excited for the potential of a new story based on the original, others have become skeptical of the new idea.

“I don’t know how they would really be able to do a sequel to the original How I Met Your Mother with the way that the original series ended. I honestly think it would just end up ruining the series all together,” said one Elder student who wants to remain unnamed in case crazy How I Met Your Mother fans come after him.

In the next few weeks, months, or years, the public will finally be able to find out if these rumors regarding a spinoff to How I Met Your Mother are true and I’m sure everyone is excited to see what the network decides to do.
