Are Democrats in tune with younger voters?
Democrats looking to go younger to take down Trump in 2020?
After a historic loss in the 2016 election, Democrats have turned their focus to the 2020 election in a desperate effort to take down Donald Trump. After news broke this week that Hilary Clinton (71 years old) is keeping the door open for a potential 2020 run, Democrats are trying to move on from the old and move in with the new.
Mr. Quatman told me that Democrats need to go younger in order to unite the party, “No young person would really be that excited to vote for someone like Hilary Clinton or Joe Biden. The same is true with the Republican party, both need to go younger.”
A lot of people think this was a reason for the low turnout of the 2016 election. The voter turnout was just under 58%, the lowest since the 2000 election.
People believe that the MeToo Movement has created a new wave of Democrats in the younger generation. They are viewed as more on the left than they previously were.
Maxwell Deters agrees with others that the Democrats need younger leadership, “Usually the higher the turnout, the more likely a Democrat will win, so you would think that the party would get someone that could get more people to vote, especially young people out to vote.”
Some think Democrats are starting to finally follow the advice after numerous young Democratic challengers were elected in the Midterms including 29 year-old Alexandria Ocasio – Cortez.
Two young Democrats who people want to run for president are Beto O’ Rourke and Andrew Gillium. Both lost tough races in the primaries, but this could be a new era of Democrats, and they just might be the new leaders.
However, both have yet to confirm they are running for the White House in 2020. Of the Democrats confirmed to be running, the favorite to take on Trump currently is Kamala Harris who just recently announced. She is 54 years old which is relatively young for a presidential candidate. Behind her are two older democrats in Elizabeth Warren and Joe Biden. Ohio’s Sherrod Brown is also in the race.
Some bad news for Democrats would be that early projections look like Trump would win reelection against all the current Democratic candidates except for Beto O’Rourke, which looks like a toss-up according to NBC Polls. O’Rourke will have to make a decision soon if he does plan to run for president in 2020.
It looks as if the standard politician is dying and that people are starting to elect more “common people” on both sides. The question still remains though is who will the Democrats pick to run against Trump. It could be the stereotypical older politician, or a younger more energized person with less experience.
