Mark Levin, one of the show’s creators and executive producers told GameSpot, “We had all of our writers on day one bring a picture of themselves as an awkward-ass adolescent.” The name Big Mouth, comes from Kroll’s famously large mouth, which Goldberg said is drawn in the show to more or less realistic proportions for 12-year-old Nick Kroll. “Mark really empathized with [his son],” Goldberg said. “He was like, ‘Is there some way to use animation to create some sort of physical manifestation of the angst of puberty? And I said, ‘Like a hormone monster or something?'” They were able to get it onto Netflix because of previously working with them.
The main characters are Nick Birch, an almost-adolescent boy living with loving and overprotective parents. He also has an older brother named Judd and an older sister named Leah. Her father, Greg, is an unemployed stoner and her mother, Shannon, is secretly dating another woman. Andrew Glouberman, a young boy who spends much of his time furtively exploring his body. And lastly, Missy Foreman-Greenwald, a girl who is nerdy and kind. These are the basic main characters of the Tv show but there are many more characters that you see all the time.
The “weird” characters in Big Mouth are, Coach Steve, the middle school gym class teacher who is incompetent and overly talkative, often trying to get his colleagues—or even the students—to hang out (often to no avail). Rick the Hormone Monster, an old, dysfunctional yet enthusiastic hormone monster who follows Coach Steve and later Nick. And lastly, Jay Bilzerian, a hot tempered Armenian American boy who is obsessed with magic and sex. These are again only some of the “weird characters” in Big Mouth because there are some many.
