Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a smashing success!
Over the past weekend, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 came out, and it produced BIG numbers. It not only pulled in $71 million but also produced the best opening weekend of any video game movie ever via IGN. It currently sits at 67% on rotten tomatoes and a 97% audience score.
My friend and I saw it over the weekend, mostly for nostalgic purposes, and the theater was surprisingly packed. The theater was more filled than when I saw The Batman on opening night. Since Sonic was losing its relevance while we were growing up, we did not expect it to have as much of an impact now as we thought but the majority of the theater was little kids. This discouraged us a little for going but the movie was worth it.
If you are a kid then this movie had everything for you. It had corny jokes, dancing, and a lot of action. I will say the effects and cgi in this movie were outstanding. For being one of the few impactful humans in the movie, Jim Carrey does an excellent job as Dr. Robotnik.
James Marsden returns as Tom, Sonic’s best friend aka the Donut Lord, and provides a lot of humor and funny quips.
If you are an adult, this movie is nothing much more than a nostalgic film. It is not terrible by any means but it is meant for more of a child friendly crowd.
The movie features the infamous blue hedgehog but this time some of his iconic friends. These would be Tails and eventually in the movie, Knuckles. In this movie, Tails and Sonic share a special friendship while Knuckles is bad at first. He later joins them and helps defeat Dr. Robotnik.
The most memorable part of the film was when Sonic took the master gem from Dr. Robotnik and turned into Super Sonic (a golden version of himself). He over took Robotnik after this and defeated him. One thing that probably excited fans the most though was after the movie. Yes, there was a post credit scene for a Sonic movie. This scene showed Shadow, every fans favorite counterpart of Sonic.
The creators are already adding a third film to the series. The only issue is that Jim Carrey just announced that he is retiring. Many still think though that he will at least come back to play Dr. Robotnik one last time.
I enjoyed the movie a lot but it is definitely for a specific crowd. If you’re a kid or an avid videogame player then you will love this movie. If not, still give it a try and let me know what you think!
