2022 Masters provides surprises
The 2022 Masters took place this past weekend and Scottie Scheffler took home the green jacket. He is a 25 year old from Texas and is currently the number one ranked golfer in the world. He was the only participant to break par in all four rounds of the Masters this year. Many expected Tiger Woods to be in the running for his sixth green jacket despite being a bit injured from his previous car crash. Unfortunately, Tiger couldn’t ever get going. He did not have his best performance despite making the cut for Saturday and Sunday.
For anyone wondering, The Masters is one of four major tournaments on the PGA tour. It is located at one of the most private golf clubs in the world. This is located in Augusta, Georgia and has been there for almost 100 years. This was the 86th Masters tournament. This club is extremely private, so much so that they offered to buy a house which sits just outside their property lines. They have offered the family who lives there millions of dollars to buy the house from them but they refuse to give it up. What would it take for you to give up that house? For me, it would be a couple million dollars, a membership to Augusta National, and life time tickets to The Masters. Seems like a good deal to me.
Rory Mcllroy took home second place at the tournament, finishing three strokes behind Scheffler, who finished -10. He would have had a larger margin if he would not have messed up on the 18th. All in all, he had plenty of room for error on the last hole because of the fact that he was so many strokes ahead. Rory played very well despite not winning the green jacket this year.
Many interesting things occurred at the Masters this year. The weather was a bit chilly which is out of the norm for Augusta this time of the year, Tiger Woods was not on his game which was a surprise to many even though his odds to win were not high, and lastly, a Texas high school has produced three champions in the past three years.
Not too often is it common for a single high school to have multiple professional athletes graduate within a few years of each other, or for them to have any pro athletes at all. Not for this one high school in Texas, though. Highland Park High School located in Dallas, Texas, has produced three major champions in three different sports in the past three years which is absurd. These athletes are Clayton Kershaw, World Series Champion 2020, class of 2006. Matthew Stafford, Super Bowl Champion 2022, class of 2006. Lastly, Scottie Scheffler, Master Champion 2022, class of 2014. This is the type of story out of a movie. How is it possible that this happens? It is simply amazing how this school produced three champions and two of them graduated together and were best friends. Matt and Clayton played together on the baseball team in high school and were good friends too.
Now, back to the actual Masters. Scottie controlled the Masters basically from the beginning. Tiger had his worst finish ever (47 place), two Americans finished in the top five, and many big names failed to perform well.
Scottie Scheffler won his first of many majors and was fantastic this weekend. Also, he did not cry after winning which won a barstool bettor a good amount of money. Although he is the number one golfer in the world right now, I didn’t know how he’d handle the pressure as he is still a youngster. He is 25 and still working his way into the mix. He played great golf this weekend which resulted in him being able to put on the famous green jacket.
