Elder tennis looks to serve up some wins this coming season

Last year, the Elder Tennis Varsity Tennis team went 13 and 6. That is surprisingly good for a sport that many deem to not be of much importance at Elder. No one realizes it, but Elder Tennis is pretty good and it should be talked about more than it is.

Tennis in the United States, as a whole, is up and down in terms of popularity, and that is apparent at Elder High School as well. Elder Varsity Tennis is coached by none other than Glenn Wauligman. They are aiming high this year and hoping they can beat St. Xavier for the first time in school history.

The tennis team lost a lot of talent with the likes of Luke Groene and Andrew Cole, but this year’s seniors look like they could be just as good. Seniors Drew Lovell and Nick Rolfes are the Varsity captains this year, and they are hoping to do better than last year’s 13 and 6 record.

Senior John Capannari, Two-time Junior Varsity Captain, told me that the team is looking like it will put a pretty good squad together to be competitive on the courts. He also said, “It would be nice to get a cheering section together at a few of the matches this year.” The games Capannari would like students to attend would be GCL matchups and rival matchups like Oak Hills.

The tennis team is always looking for new talent, so anyone wanting to play should not think twice about signing up. The first match is set up to be played on Monday, March 30, 2015 against Covington Catholic. Everyone is talking about baseball and volleyball being able to compete for a State title this year and they are the favorite sports among the Elder student body in the spring time, but tennis could shock us all, you just never know what can happen.
