Every truly great team has its members that understand their roles. You have the star player, the vocal leader, the assist man, the sixth man, and even the benchwarmers. If the members of the team don’t understand their roles the result could be disastrous. There is a reason Rudy only got to dress one game believe it or not.

A newspaper is basically a team. The owner of the paper reigns supreme, in our case, Mr. Gary Rogers. Below the owner are the editors, the people that put together the paper and proof all stories that go out. Then you have your staff writers, the young and hungry up and comers that are trying to make a name for themselves. All of these components together make up a newspaper.

Thinking of this concept led me to the idea of power ranking our very own, Purple Quill. Self-evaluation is a very key component to success, so in doing this I am self-evaluating the entire staff. Nice of me, I know. Just another day as the Head of Team Morale.

Hardest Worker

I have to start off with Rogers’ favorite, Joe Reiter. The kid works, period. First one in last one out. Plays for the name on the front of the jersey, not the name on the back. He’s typing away at the keyboard when everyone else has already left. A real writer’s writer. Joe is not only one of the hardest workers, but always putting out solid content. You can always count on Joe to turn assignments in on time as well, not something that our staff is really known for. Keep grinding Joe.

Content Master

When it comes to journalism I’ve learned that it’s all about content, content, content. Collin Scheiner is a content machine. He is always giving the crowd what they want. It also helps that he is basically the hippest man on this side of town. Whether he is creating a dumby lit trippy image in Photoshop or editing some footy for the “Fantastic Food Search” he is just oozing content. Stay lit fam, I see you.

Punctual Pen (On time)

As previously stated, our staff isn’t the best when it comes to turning in articles on time. Even though studies do show people that are always late tend to be more successful and creative, but this article is not about the study of late people. Anyway, the man that is almost never on time with his work is none other than Sam Otten. The kid leaves and breathes being late. I’m not sure if he has turned in one assignment on time. His lack of caring has even led him to posting an article with about 200 words about some new roller coaster at Kings Island. Give the kid some credit though, he is a team player. He never does forget his role.

Rudy of the Team (Team Player)

I would like to think that everyone knows of the story of Rudy at Notre Dame. A small kid from a small town to play for the Fighting Irish. Not skilled physically or mentally, but the heart of a lion. I am starting to think that Tyler Schutte is this exact character. I know the kid puts out a lot of garbage, and his grade in journalism is probably the worst in the class, but man the kid loves life. Not many other sophomores could take the heat that he receives every day and continue to come in and make a bigger fool out of himself, but he does because he understands that he is writing for a bigger reason. Keep on writing Schutte, writers write.

Kardashian Award (Famous for doing nothing)

I cannot lie and say that our staff is full of capital J Journalists. There are, however, certain people that get away with doing almost nothing. The first person everyone wants to point to is Keller, but I guess he creates pictures or something. In my opinion the slacker of the year is Elder Wrestling’s very own, Nino Salamone. His pop culture grid is quite honestly worse than anything Schutte’s turned in all year. Every man on the grid was a wrestler other than one, and that one kid sits next to him in a class. Not very much effort out of the man to go and get quotes from outside sources, but that’s none of my business. The pop culture grid is also rivaled by his constant writing about video games that no one actually cares about. One has to respect a man who can get a decent grade without doing anything. Kudos to you Nino, keep doing you.

In the end, The Quill is a team. We do what we have to do to get the job done. It might not always be pretty or on time, but we try. That is all you really can ask from anyone. We might not be the most talented, athletic, good looking, funny, cool, or smart, but I can guarantee you that we will give it our all. The Quill is old, basically ancient, and it is not going anywhere. This is all because the staff has always been made up by a solid group of dudes that know their roles and work well together.
