General Motors (GM) companies are affecting American jobs

Why some of GM factories are being shut down

General Motors companies, also known as GM, are not making these car models anymore: the Buick Lacrosse, the Cadillac CT6, the Cadillac XTS, the Chevrolet Cruze, the Chevrolet Impala, and the Chevrolet Volt, according to Peter Valdes-Dapena for CNN Business. This is affecting all GM car dealerships across the United States.

According to Neal E. Boudette of the New York Times, the reason why these car models aren’t being made by GM is the slow down in new car sales. Many of their customers have moved on toward pickup trucks and sport-utility vehicles as a result of the low gasoline prices. Many people want to save money on gas by buying other GM model cars.

General Motors said that five of its factories will be closed down in North America which will cut up to 14,000 jobs. These five factories are in: Ohio, Michigan, Maryland, and the Canadian province of Ontario. Donald Trump referred to GM’s chief executive, Mary T. Barra, and he told reporters, “I spoke to her and I stressed the fact that I am not happy with what she said.”

This shows that Mary T. Barra just cares about the company’s costs rather than the people who will be losing their jobs by these GM factories being closed down.

One of these GM dealerships in the U.S. that is being affected is in Lordstown, Ohio. According to Julia Horowitz of CNN business, the Chevy Cruze sedan is made in a 6.2 million-square-foot plant in Ohio’s Mahoning Valley.

This plant facility is going to no longer be in use next March unless GM makes another vehicle like this one. Union leaders and local officials are hoping that GM will change its mind by then by making another vehicle to replace the Chevy Cruze. Lordstown’s Mayor, Arno Hill, said to CNN Business, “We have a great product, but we have it at the wrong time.” This quote shows the disappointment in the Chevy Cruze not being able to be made anymore.

In my opinion, it is crazy that these five factories are making a lot of people lose their jobs by having them shut down. The chief executive, Mary T. Barra, has to have another car style made soon for GM.  I don’t think people will buy their cars anymore because they are taking away jobs from people who didn’t deserve to lose their jobs.
