After a detrimental season for Coach Joe Schoenfeld and his Elder Panther basketball squad, he has decided to move his talents to the college level. They went 0-6 in GCL play this past season and got eliminated early in postseason play by Hamilton Big Blue. By Schoenfeld’s standards, that’s not what he wanted at all.
He will be joining the coaching staff of West Liberty University, joining his former point guard, Cameron Williams. His senior year, he won GCL Player of the Year and helped his team do well in the tournament. On senior night last year versus the nasty St. Xavier Bombers, he had the game of his life with 20 points and four rebounds, leading the Panthers to a 55-49 victory.
Imagine what Cameron could do with his old, favorite coach back. He’s been playing so well recently. A couple weeks ago against Glenville State, he dropped 21 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. What a stat stuffer. They came out of that one barely in double overtime 105-100.
Even though Coach Schoenfeld didn’t have the best season, I think he’ll do great at West Liberty. He already knows how Cam plays and how to coach him. “He’s probably one of the most coachable guys that I’ve ever had on any of my teams,” said Coach Schoenfeld. He’s super excited to meet all the other players on the team as well. “I enjoyed coaching him at Elder, and I’ll definitely enjoy coaching him at the collegiate level.”
Cam Williams is exhilarated for this hire. “I couldn’t be more excited to have my old coach back. He’s a great guy, and he’ll be a great addition the coaching staff here.” He wants to keep the play style he had at Elder and believes that this hire will help him do that.
At Elder, he always played hard and aggressive. Got to the rim when he wanted to but could also shoot from outside. “At Elder, I wanted people to remember me as a player who always put it all out on the court, never gave up, and an overall good teammate.” He definitely accomplished that. Coach Schoenfeld made him that way.
His coaching IQ is unmatched. “I always try to run plays specific to how we play. I try my best to recognize mismatches and get it to a guy who’s going to score, even with good defense on him.” The way that he runs his offense and defense is so smart and savvy, other coaches never really know what he’s going to run.
Overall, Schoenfeld is happy that he’s back with his former player and Cam Williams is overjoyed to reunite with one of his favorite coaches at West Liberty.
Just kidding! April Fools!
