A repeat episode?

The 66th Primetime Emmys were more of a repeat episode than an award show. Recurring winners included most of the Breaking Bad cast along with the show itself, and Modern Family was the same way. Once again cable ruled over network television with nominees such as Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, and True Detective dominating the categories.

Seth Meyers was for sure an above average host roasting stars such as Matthew McConaughey for “winning all the awards,” and even stating “why don’t we give you the BET award for best hip hop artist too?”

Besides the jokes there was a touching tribute to Robin Williams in which Billy Crystal remembered some of his good times with Williams. Crystal reminisced about Williams by stating, “It’s very hard to talk about him in the past, because he was so present, in all our lives.”

As for the awards, comedy was spread over many different series. Best actor in a comedic series went to Jim Parsons, and best actress went to Julia Louis-Dreyfus in Veep. Best comedic series and directing and many various awards went to Modern Family, ousting the competition for a fifth straight year. American Horror Story impressed its cult fan base as it was the big winner for Miniseries.

Now for the A listers. Breaking Bad, True Detective, Game of Thrones, and House of Cards are the television shows that everyone has been watching, and rooting for. This being the last year Breaking Bad could be nominated, its huge fan base must have been pulling for them the whole show.

As you may have expected Breaking Bad pulled off a sweep, winning best series, outstanding writing/directing, best actor, best supporting actor, and best supporting actress. Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston gave acceptance speeches that perfected their swan songs by mentioning friendship, and being blessed by this opportunity. Bryan Cranston joked about winning by stating, “Even I thought about voting for Matthew, I feel blessed with an abundance of good fortune in my life.”

Away from the tributes and awards were some very humorous moments. As Julia Louis-Dreyfus was receiving her award Bryan Cranston stopped her and gave her a little more than she was expecting. Jimmy Kimmel had a hilarious speech including a comment about Matthew McConaughey that involved a conch shell and a plant. Weird Al and Andy Samberg teamed up to do a spoof on Game of Thrones that had the whole audience laughing.

Overall the Emmys were average. There were typical winners, not many surprises but some good fun and heartfelt tributes. The comedy was great especially with all the presenters who had to get their digs in on fellow actors. With Breaking Bad not being able to be nominated next year the 67th Emmys should be more of a guessing game.
