Green Book took home the “Best Picture” at this year’s Oscars. but was it the most deserving?

“My thoughts on Green Book winning best picture? Pathetic. Next Question.”

That was Spike Lee’s reaction to Green Book winning Best Picture at the Oscars.  Lee wasn’t the only person who was upset as most were stunned when the award was given out.  Green Book not only went up against Lee’s BlacKkKlansman but also beat out Bohemian Rhapsody, Black Panther, The Favourite, Vice, A Star is Born, and Roma.

Of all the nominees, Green Book had the worst rating on the movie review site Rotten Tomatoes’ getting just a 7.2 and MetaCritic getting a 6.9, which left many complaining.

Green Book wins the Oscar for best picture.

The plot is about a world class African-American pianist, Dan Shirley, who goes on tour in the deep, racist, south of the United States in 1962.  Fearing attacks and mobs, Shirley finds a body guard by the name of Tony Lip from Brooklyn, New York, who is skeptical at first, but eventually agrees to protect Shirley in his venture down south.

Things got interesting when Shirley’s family told the media that the directors inflated the story massively, and they were not contacted to review the movie until have it had already been produced.

Obviously, the story’s plot drew in a lot of people, but the reviews came back average leading to people questioning how Green Book could have won.

Avid movie watcher Jack Burgasser thinks Vice should have won best picture saying, “I thought the depiction was very descriptive and accurate and the portrayals were amazing, especially Christian Bale.”  Vice depicts the life and political career of former Vice President of the United States, Dick Cheney.

Another movie aficionado in John Connors said A Star Is Born should have won the Oscar.  John said, “It tackles mental health in a love story. That really has never been done before.” The plot is about a seasoned musician Jackson Maine, who discovers and falls in love with, struggling artist Ally. She has just about given up on her dream to make it big as a singer until Jackson coaxes her into the spotlight. But even as Ally’s career takes off, the personal side of their relationship is breaking down, as Jackson fights an ongoing battle with his own internal demons.

Most critics had Roma tabbed as the favorite for best picture, taking home ten awards on the night. Others had Bohemian Rhapsody, the story of the band Queen, receiving the most coveted award.

Conspiracy theories, of course, started to fly on social media saying that Green Book won the award strictly because it was a racial story of white man helping a black man, and that the award was politically motivated.  Most will agree that Green Book was the wrong choice, weather it was politically motivated or not.
