The Suicide Squad exceeds expectations

The Suicide Squad movie has been out for no more than two months and is already a DC fan favorite. The Suicide Squad not to be mixed up with Suicide Squad(2016) acts as a follow up to that film. The film came in at a whopping 91% rotten tomato score and a 82% audience score. It is the highest rated DC movie since 2017’s Wonder Woman.

James Gunn’s masterpiece includes stars Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Sylvester Stallone as King Shark, and John Cena as Peacemaker. Gunn who did not direct the first Suicide Squad has directed other big movies such as both Guardians of the Galaxy films which any viewer can see similarities between them and this film. It certainly is not a bad thing of course considering how well both did.

The film takes place in Corto Maltese after the government sent the deadliest supervillains there on a search and destroy mission to blow up a research lab to “save” the world . The movie is an action-packed comedy/drama and gives every viewer everything the first movie didn’t. There are many twist and turns that the audience does not see coming.

One of the biggest takeaways from the film is the character development. In just two hours and 12 minutes, the movie does an amazing job in making the audience love the characters. Most viewers left though loving the character with the least amount of lines in the film. This would be none other than King Shark. There were a ton of other very funny characters too including: Polka-Dot Man, Weasel, and Rat Catcher 2. Gunn does a great job in making the characters hilarious in such high stakes moments. King Shark is personally my favorite character and never failed to make me a laugh throughout the film. The funniest moment in the movie, however, was at the beginning when Weasel, who is a man-like rat/weasel creature, jumps off the plane into the water with all the other team members and ends up “drowning“. The best part is the reaction of everyone because no one knew he couldn’t swim.

One thing that surprised me the most was how well John Cena did in the film. I knew before that he acted in movies like Bumblebee and Daddy’s Home 2 but I did not think he was this capable of doing so well at a role. Another actor that surprised me was Idris Elba who played Bloodsport who is the leader of the group in the film. Idris has appeared in movies such as the Thor series as Heimdall and even has appeared in some episodes of the Office as Charles Minor. Then of course we received another great installment of Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn who continued to show again why she was made for the role of the Joker’s iconic sidekick.

This movie is a must watch and receives a 10/10 from me. Once you get past the horrors of the last movie and take a chance on it, you won’t regret it. James Gunn out did himself once again and has hopefully started a comeback of good DC films that can eventually compete with Marvel down the line.
