It’s a crisp fall evening in Cincinnati, and the atmosphere is electric. The football field is packed with fans, eagerly awaiting the start of the game. But it’s not just the players who are generating excitement. It’s the roaring, chanting, and cheering coming from the stands that truly sets the tone. This is the Pit, featuring the student section of Elder High School, and it’s renowned for creating a daunting atmosphere for opposing teams.

The Pit isn’t just any ordinary student section. It’s a well-organized and passionate group of students who are committed to supporting their teams. Led by a group of dedicated senior leaders, the Pit works tirelessly to come up with creative chants, cheers, and signs to rally the crowd and intimidate the opposing team.

After talking to Coach Spencer Kendra ’16 he said that “one of the most unique aspects of the Pit is its tradition of wearing black. Every student in the Pit dons a black shirt and black pants, creating a sea of darkness that is both striking and intimidating. The black attire is not just a fashion statement, it’s a symbol of unity and solidarity among the students.”

As the game begins, the Pit springs to life. The students start chanting and jumping up and down, creating a thunderous roar that reverberates throughout the stadium. The energy is infectious, and soon the entire crowd is on their feet, cheering and shouting in unison.

The Pit expands its legacy beyond Cincinnati – The Purple Quill

From talking to Jeffery Cushard ’67, who did not play but was in the student section. “It’s not just the noise that makes the Pit so intimidating, it’s also the creativity and cleverness of their chants and cheers. From mocking the opposing team’s star player to taunting the referees, the Pit knows exactly how to get under their opponents’ skin. And while their chants can be harsh at times, they never cross the line into disrespect or vulgarity.”

In addition to their vocal support, the Pit also uses visual cues to intimidate their opponents. From enormous banners to elaborate signs, they spare no expense in showing their enthusiasm and dedication. And it’s not just the size and quality of the signs that impresses, it’s also the messages they convey. From witty slogans to inspirational quotes, the Pit knows how to make a statement.

But the Pit isn’t just about creating a daunting atmosphere for the opposing team – it’s also about supporting their own. They cheer loudly and passionately for every player, offering words of encouragement and praise. Whether a player makes a great play or a mistake, the Pit is there to lift them up and show them that they have the support of the entire school.

As the game comes to a close and the final whistle blows, the energy in the Pit doesn’t leave. The students continue to chant and cheer, celebrating their team’s victory and showing their appreciation for the hard work and dedication of the players. And while the result of the game may be important, what truly matters is the bond and sense of community that is fostered in the Pit.
