Prisoners is one of the craziest thriller movies I’ve ever seen because it feels way too real the whole time. The movie is about two little girls who disappear on Thanksgiving, and their families completely panic trying to find them. Hugh Jackman plays Keller Dover, one of the dads, and he slowly starts losing control because the police are not finding answers fast enough. Jake Gyllenhaal plays Detective Loki, who is trying to solve the case before something terrible happens. The movie feels realistic because nobody acts perfect. Everyone is stressed, angry, scared, and making bad decisions.
The craziest part is when Keller thinks a guy named Alex kidnapped the girls. The police let Alex go because they do not have enough proof, but Keller refuses to believe he is innocent. Keller ends up kidnapping Alex himself and torturing him to try and get answers. These scenes are honestly hard to watch because you know what Keller is doing is wrong, but at the same time you kind of understand why he is doing it. The movie makes you think about how far a parent would go to save their kid.
The plot twist at the end is insane because Alex was never actually the real kidnapper. He was a victim too. The real villain was Holly Jones, an older woman nobody really suspected. She and her husband kidnapped kids for years after losing their own son. Holly had kidnapped Alex when he was younger and basically ruined his whole life. That twist completely changes the movie because the audience spends most of the film blaming the wrong person.
The ending is also really intense. Holly traps Keller in a hidden underground pit, and Detective Loki finally f
igures everything out and saves the girls. At the very end, Loki hears Keller blowing a whistle underground, which hints that he might still get rescued. The movie does not fully show it though, which makes the ending even creepier.
What makes Prisoners so good is that it feels like something that could actually happen. There are no superheroes or perfect endings. It just shows how desperate and messed up people can become when something horrible happens to their family.
