 Fishy situation

Is there a connection between animal behavior and events in nature?

Many times you see animals go crazy or act weird when a big storm is coming; many times before humans even realize that something is about to happen.

One of these animalistic behaviors is being displayed by the oarfish. An oarfish is a large snake like deep see fish that is usually about 15ft in length. It is believed that these large mysterious fish can help predict seismic activity.

It was said in an old Japanese legend that the appearance of the oarfish precedes an earthquake. And recently on the coast of California two dead Oarfish have washed up on shore; could this possibly be a sign of a future natural disaster? I

“I believe is could be possible, changes in the environment have weird effects on animals,” said senior Billy Angel, who loves all things animal.

Rachel Grant, a lecturer in biology at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge is a professional when it comes to marine activity.

“It’s theoretically possible because when an earthquake occurs there can be a build-up of pressure in the rocks which can lead to electrostatic charges that cause electrically-charged ions to be released into the water,” Dr.  Grant said.

There really is no scientific proof of a connection between oarfish and seismic activity. The oarfish found on the coast of California in scientific tests, failed to show any signs that point to why they were stranded on the shore. Grant and other scientist are still studying the possible connection the oarfish sightings may have on seismic activity, but there is no denying that the  myth behind these rare fish is all too strange.
