What’s the best rivalry on the Westside? You may be think Elder versus St. X or Mercy versus Seton but what you should be thinking is The Elder Glee Club versus The Elder Band. Every year these two organizations meet for their annual turkey bowl football game. After last year’s game ending in conflict the Glee Club was determined to assert their dominance and obtain The Golden Glockenspiel Trophy.
After a nani nani cheer from varsity football player Joe Weiner the Glee Club was fired up and the game began.
Glee scored first on a touchdown pass, and from that point on the game was history. The Glee Club went on to win dominatingly 35-14.

Tyler Wuebbolt caught a touchdown pass and commented “Some band kid ripped my sweatshirt but it was worth it, because we got the dub.”
Senior second tenor David Stamper said, “I’ve had a lot of fun competing in this game the past four years. The game this year was especially fun to play in.” David gives advice to the younger glee club members saying, “Live in the moment and enjoy every second of it.” His final statement was “have fun and don’t let the cold get to you.”

The Band struggled to find a Quarterback and had many different players try only to fumble or throw interceptions. Glee on the other hand did not have that problem and was led by JV quarterback Mark Klusman.

There was drama, however; as Adam Helmer’s head was spilt open on my own jaw. Helmers was taken to the hospital and received eight stiches. Helmers recounts the story: “I was running with the ball to right side and saw a guy coming (myself) to tackle me so I lowered my shoulder to brace for impact. We collided and his bottom jaw slammed against the top of my head. I didn’t feel anything that wouldn’t have stopped playing if Duncan hadn’t told me I was bleeding. I then called my dad and was taken to the hospital.” Helmers had no other injuries and when asked about if he would play next year he responded, “Without a doubt.”

Other drama included a fellow Glee Clubber Spencer Laird playing for the band. That didn’t sit well with many glee kids. There was talk about rescheduling the game but for the moment the Glee Club stands victorious.

Luckily you didn’t have to be there to catch all the action. We’ve complied a video highlight reel to recap all the action.
It was a hard fought game with both sides trying their hardest. Let’s pray all injured have a speedy recovery and for fair completion for next year.
