Philadelphia Eagles: fake or fluke?

Philadelphia Eagles suffer a devastating loss

The Philadelphia Eagles undefeated run came to an end on Monday night. After eight weeks of winning the Eagles finally lost to the Washington Commanders. This now raises the question: Was this game a fluke or is the team?

Throughout the first half of the 2022 NFL season, the Eagles have been plowing through teams. Many people were skeptical, thinking they were just lucky or they had an easy schedule. While their schedule was decently easy, the team as a whole was putting up major numbers. That all changed during Monday Night Football.

The Eagles were set to play the Commanders again for this edition of MNF. Previously in week three, the Eagles had crushed the mediocre Commanders. This time, however, that wasn’t the case. During the first quarter of the game, the Eagles still seemed unbeatable scoring 14 points. After that, however, they couldn’t seem to score. Despite Jalen Hurts (the Eagles quarterback) throwing for 175 years with a 65% completion rate, they still lost. This begs the question: What went wrong? The 4-5 Commanders should have easily lost this game. That was not the case.

Eagles Head Coach Nick Sirianni explaining the loss

Nick Sirianni, the Eagles’ head coach, said, “The three turnovers lost us the game, the time of possession loses you the game. We lost it together. Offense, defense, special teams, coaching — we lost it together.” His conclusion is that the reason for the loss is simple: they played terribly. Along with his reasoning, many people believe that the refs are the reason the Eagles lost that games. During the game, the refs threw some controversial flags on the Eagles which could have led to their downfall. When asked about this Sirianni said, “Whether the officials made bad calls or whatever, when you play the way they did on Monday night in all three phases of the game, it seems like everything is going against you.” While the refs are an easy things to blame, mistakes will ultimately be the reason. One of the major things that the head coach said they need to work on is ball security. He said that the Dallas Goedert fumble was one of the most costliest mistakes of the game. He said that the turnovers were killer to their success.

While this is a devastating loss for the Eagles, they are still first in their division. They still have a good shot at making the playoffs. We just have to hope that this loss doesn’t affect the moral of the team.
